Day 32 - June 11, 2023. Niagara Falls, NY - Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON
A relaxed start today shortly after 9am. Less than 30km primarily on bike path from Niagara Falls to NOTL. I've done this one several times in days gone by, so nothing new for me.
Back over the Rainbow Bridge to get from New York to Ontario.
We passed a Harriet Truman "tribute" near the Whirlpool Bridge. Underwhelming, but an UGRR landmark. In 1855 a railroad suspension bridge was built in this location, and apparently Harriet used that bridge as her route into Canada in 1856.
I took a brief detour into the Niagara Horticultural grounds which I've never been into before. Found out that this tree, which I've seen before on this trip, is of the Dogwood family. The Butterfly Conservatory is also located here, but I have been into there before.
More pics into the gorge near the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.
Pics (again) at the Mackenzie Printery.
An easy ride in to Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL). Lisa sent me message that she was already at the hotel so I didn't waste much time on the last few miles.
It is great to see Lisa Little Legs again; thanks to her for coming. We spent a lazy afternoon - lunch, ice cream, walking downtown. We have our final group dinner tonight and most people head back to Buffalo at 8am tomorrow. Sad to see another one of these epics come to an end.......
Niagara on the Lake, Ontario
Population: 17,511 (2016). It served as the first capital of the province of Upper Canada. During the War of 1812 the town and nearby villages were the sites of numerous battles following the American invasion of Upper Canada. Today, NOTL draws tourists with its colonial-style buildings, the Shaw Festival, Fort George, wineries, an outlet mall, and its proximity to Niagara Falls.
Stats for the day:
Distance: 29.9 km / 18.6 miles
Elevation (Garmin): 108m up / 195m down. 354' up / 639' down.
Elevation (RWGPS): 388m up / 483m down. 1273' up / 1584' down.
Weather: 16C. Overcast and rained a bit, but not enough to put a rain jacket on. It was such a short ride that weather wasn't a factor at all.
