Day 19 - May 29, 2023. Newport, KY
Rest day in Cincinnati. Huge thanks to Linda for all her advance research and arranging for a private tour at the Harriet Beecher Stowe House and to Jacquie for building on Linda's work and calling on her contacts for a private tour at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center on a day that they would normally be closed. Thanks to our guides for providing transportation for us.
The more we see and hear, the deeper the understanding for me. Also - the various pieces we're learning along the way are starting to link together a bit better.
First up - Harriet Beecher Stowe House. This is the house where she moved with her family when she was in her late teens and her father took a job at the Lane Theological Seminary. The house itself if deep in renovations, but the director spoke to us outside for over an hour before taking us in to see a bit and visit their bookstore and visitor centre. I think I need to take a year off next just to sit and read all the book I want to.
Next up - a delicious kale salad for lunch and a 2pm private tour at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center - what a gem of a museum! We easily could have spent a full day there, but moved through in about 2 hours out of respect for the time of the young gentleman who came in on a holiday to show us around. Terrific museum!
